This overview has been written to help advisers assess new access routes, in particular coastal access routes. It is one of a series of three information notes that demonstrate good practice for integrating access, biodiversity and landscape objectives. Together these notes provide detailed guidance on how to adopt a consistent approach to implementing new access projects that meets the legal requirements to assess the implications of a proposed access project for nature conservation.
A range of sites and factors can be assessed as part of this process. However, the process has been specifically designed to include an assessment of any likely effects on Natura 2000 (N2K) sites so that the assessment and decision-making process can meet the requirements of Regulation 61 of The Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2010 (the Habitats Regulations).
