The project was undertaken to provide baseline information as to the identity of the species of stipitate hydnoid fungi occurring in the UK, information on their genetic diversity, and possible mechanisms for the maintenance and spread of populations. The genera Hydnellum and Phellodon were selected for this study, and particular consideration was given to potential species pairs in Hydnellum. One hundred and two collections of stipitate hydnoid fungi were provided by collectors in the UK from the autumn 2001 and autumn 2002 collecting seasons.
