R466 - The endangered myxomycetes of the British Isles (R466)

62 species of myxomycetes are considered as threatened, of which 20 are probably Extinct (EX), four are critically endangered (CR), six are endangered (EN) and 32 are Vulnerable (VU). The most threatened habitats are straw heaps at the edges of cornfields, snow-patch vegetation on mountains used for commercial skiing, and heaths on coastal dunes and shingle. There is a single SSSI designated for myxomycetes but, in general, there is little experience in managing sites specifically for myxomycetes. The creation of artificial habitats, eg straw bales to replaced straw heaps, has had some success. Maintenance of high biodiversity generally, with a full range of seral stages within a vegetation complex, is seen as the best strategy.
