Our Strategic Direction 2006 – 2009, published in June 2006, gave focus and clear direction to our first 18 months. We said then that we would develop our strategic direction in our second year to give a fuller expression of Natural England’s vision for the natural environment.State of the Natural Environment (2008).
To develop our strategic direction, we have drawn on a wide range of views from stakeholders. We have also drawn on the data and analysis of the current state and future risks and challenges for the natural environment from the State of the Natural Environment (2008).
Here, in our Strategic Direction 2008 – 2013, we describe the outcomes we want to achieve for the natural environment over the next five years. We have created a framework of objectives within which we will develop our policies, advocacy and delivery activities to address the challenges ahead. We also describe how we will work and who we will work with to build consensus and momentum for action. Our Corporate Plan 2008 – 2011 will describe in more detail the specific programmes, activities, resources and partnerships that will deliver our strategic direction.
The measures of success for each objective will help us to assess how effective we are collectively, in working to secure a healthy and resilient natural environment over the next five years. We have set out what we need to measure and will work with others to develop an approach and gather evidence to establish the success of each objective.
