Natural England’s role in the climate change adaptation is shaped by our purpose – to conserve, enhance and manage the natural environment for its intrinsic value and for the benefit of current and future generations, thereby contributing to sustainable development.
Our work aims to increase the capacity of the natural environment to cope with climate change.
Our areas of activity
Natural England’s adaptation activities are focused in three key areas:
- Working with and influencing Government and other key partners to ensure that adaptation is sustainable and recognises the importance of healthy and resilient ecosystems
- Delivering conservation on the ground that will help ensure the natural environment is resilient in the face of climate change
- Working with the research community to develop the knowledge and responses required to conserve the natural environment.
Character Area Climate Change Project
Natural England's Character Area Climate Change project aims to identify the local responses required to safeguard our natural environment and our enjoyment of it. We looked at four specific Character Areas in England that represent contrasting habitats and landscapes that are likely to be affected by climate change.
The four character areas are: Cumbria High Fells, Shropshire Hills, Dorset Downs and Cranbourne Chase, and the Broads.
