New ponds can quickly develop into valuable wildlife habitats and it is very rewarding to see species arrive and increase. The key to success is to create ponds where the natural soil or geology retains water and there is a sufficient supply of unpolluted water. There are two main types of ponds, temporary ones which dry out in late summer and permanent ones that usually hold water throughout the year. Both can be valuable. Aim to create ponds that suit the conditions of the site and the species you are trying to encourage.
